About The Flame
The San Francisco Flame is the electronic newsletter
of the First Unitarian Universalist Society of San Francisco.
The Flame is edited by volunteers under the authority of
the Society. The current editor is
Galen Workman.
This newsletter is designed to supplement the printed
monthly San Francisco Unitarian. Because some
members and friends of the Society are not e-mail enabled, the
monthly bulletin remains the primary publication to reach the
entire community.
The Flame will emphasize the Sunday worship services
and other information that becomes known after the deadline for
the paper newsletter. The Flame will also provide a
forum for an exchange of ideas among its readership.
Announcements for regular organizational meetings that are
already featured on the Society's calendar will not routinely be
published. On-going events should be listed in the
Society's newsletter calendar published on-line in PDF format.
The Flame will provide a link to the newsletter so
readers can conveniently view the information.
Additional Flame philosophy is available online.

Submitting News, Photos, and
Essays
Readers are encouraged to send in news items, photographs,
letters to the editor, and essays for inclusion in The Flame.
The format of The Flame allows for a short synopsis of
an article in the main newsletter with an optional picture.
However, the full story can be of any length. For long
submissions, The Flame
will provide a link to the complete article posted on an
Internet page.
Please
e-mail
your
items to the editor. We will acknowledge your submission within
a day so that you know we got it!
Deadlines
The normal nominal deadline for publication is noon on
Tuesday for a targeted Thursday release. However, The
Flame may be published before Thursday to accommodate the schedule of the volunteer reporters
and editors. Therefore, if you
have a hot item for the weekly newsletter, let us know ASAP so
we don't go to press without you.
News that breaks after the Tuesday
deadline may be included in that week's newsletter if the
editor is notified and the information is delivered by noon
Wednesday.
Writing for The Flame
News, reflections, and essays to share with the Unitarian
Universalist community are welcome! In keeping with the
traditions of a liberal religious community, these editorial
guidelines will be used:
- News stories should include who, what, where, and when.
Why someone should join in would be good, too!
- Articles should be written to either to inform or to
persuade. Material should be free of personal attacks, ad
Hominem argument, or partisan political
statements.
- Public Policy statements should be written in way that
does not assume that the reader already agrees with the
author. It's hard to do this sometimes, but ....
- Pictures, descriptions, or mention of any non-public
individual, such as another member of the Congregation,
should be made only with the consent of the referenced
individual. Basically, this means if you have a great
picture of someone or a story to tell about them, make sure
that they first say it's okay to share it.
News-like stories or photos of event participants generally
do not require explicit permission for publication.
- Material sent in should be written by you -- not cut and
pasted from another source.
- Read the Flame
philosophy for further information on editorial policies
When you submit something to The Flame you:
- Agree to allow editing to conform to the publication
guidelines, space requirements, clarity, and other similar
reasons.
- Agree that The Flame may copyright and/or reprint
your submission on-line and in other forums the editors feel
appropriate (such as submitting it to local newspapers, the
UUA, or other venue).
- Affirm that unless you state differently you are the
author/creator of the submission and that there are no
copyrights on the material. If the material is
copyrighted, please include the copyright information and
your authorization to have the material used by The Flame.
The Flame's first edition was June 17, 2004. It
continues publication only through of the support of the
community. Your comments, suggestions, and input are critically
important and welcome. |
