July 28, 2005 Leave Early Sunday to Maneuver Around the Marathon
Greetings!

The San Francisco Marathon will delay north-south traffic through the City Sunday morning. Last year the trip from Noe Valley to church which normally takes 20 minutes required a detour and over an hour. So, if you're coming from south of the race route, leave for church early!

The street closures are posted online along with a map of the race course. In past years the police and traffic departments have been unhelpful in suggesting cross-town routes. You may want to contact your Supervisor for routing suggestions.

What Still Connects Us
Denis Paul   Sunday at 11 in the Sanctuary
Lucy Smith will join Denis Paul to focus on the most pressing theological question facing Unitarian Universalists: what still connects us forty-plus years after the consolidation?

We'll look at some of the issues, rituals and beliefs that can keep each of us committed to the Unitarian Universalist church, our congregations, the larger communities in which we live and each other. We'll also explore some examples of what works in other faith traditions.

Tekla Cunningham will be performing on a viola with selections from Bach's 4th Suite in E Flat. Mark Sumner will be on the piano to accompany the hymns.

Merida Wilson, Suzanne Wong, and their son Samuel will be lighting the chalice. Merida and Suzanne have been members of the Society for two years, and Merida just graduated in May from Starr King School for the Ministry. The adoption of their son was finalized last month.

Lucy and her husband Thad recruited Seph and Denis Paul into their El Cerrito neighborhood a couple years ago. They have been enjoying each other's company and community involvement ever since.

California Tsunamis - Fact or Fiction

The soup luncheon starts after the service and a $3 donation is requested. The presentation starts at 12:45 and is free.

Congregational Survey Released August 1st
from Galen Workman   Available online Monday -- Paper Copies Mailed the Next Week
The Ministerial Search Committee will survey the Congregation during August. Members, friends, staff, and other members of our community will be asked to answer questions about themselves and what they are looking for in our next minister. The questionnaire will take approximately 20 minutes to complete, and can be answered online.

On Monday a special email message will be sent to you with the an web address for you to click on to view and complete the survey. During the week of August 8th, the Committee will mail hardcopies of the survey to people who receive the Society's monthly newsletter unless they have already said that they would fill the survey out online.

The Congregational Survey supplements the facts and views of the community that were gathered by the Ministerial Model Task Force (MMTF) earlier this year. It gives everyone -- whether they participated in the MMTF meetings or not -- the opportunity to help guide the decisions that will shape our community for years to come.

Click to Tell the Committee You'll Take the Survey Online and Don't Need a Mailed Copy. (You can take the survey online even if you don't tell the Committee ahead of time.)

Search Committee
At last week's retreat, the Search Committee selected Liz Strand as its Chair. Other Committee roles include Ben Bear as Survey Coordinator, and Galen Workman as Secretary and Communications Coordinator. Pictured left to right are Don Williams, Liz Strand, Carlowe Connelly, Ben Bear, Luanne Schulte, Galen Workman, Leslie Bader, and Judy Payne.

The Committee developed a detailed time line, task list, and responsibility matrix for its remaining work. This information will be shared with the Congregation as soon as the Committee types up the notes from the weekend. The Search Information Table will be in the Starr King Room after the service on Sunday, and you are invited to stop by with your questions and comments.

Charles J. Wade

Among Charles' activities in our community include service on the Board of Trustees, membership in the UUs for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, and program arranger for the Society of Community Work.

Unitarian Universalists React to Initiative Filing
from the Reverend Lindi Ramsden   Voters to Face Attempt to Outlaw Domestic Partnerships, Marriage
The California Attorney General announced Monday that paperwork has been filed to initiate the campaign to eliminate existing Domestic Partnerships and outlaw Marriage Equality. "California can and must be the state where the voters take a stand, declaring that discrimination against any minority group has no place in our constitution," said the Rev. Lindi Ramsden in response to the filing.

Rev. Ramsden, Executive Director of the Unitarian Universalist Legislative Ministry Action Network California, went on to say, "An energized and organized progressive religious coalition will be essential in the efforts to defeat this anti-gay, anti-family, anti-marriage, and discriminatory ballot initiative. Unitarian Universalists, who have been marrying same gender couples in our congregations for over thirty years, have a vital role to play – educating, organizing, and providing emotional and spiritual support to those couples and their children whose lives will be most dramatically effected by the debate and the outcome."

"While the securing of human rights is rarely a smooth road, the love for one’s family and the commitment to personal integrity, create a relentless force that cannot be stopped," she continued. "The moral momentum is in the direction of civil rights and simple justice."

The UU Legislative Ministry Action Network will be working with UUs across California to "Stand on the Side of Love".

The Attorney General's summary of the proposed initiative is online in PDF format.
