You Can Go Home Again...
But You Need to Plan the Trip
Eastbound Bay Bridge Closed this Weekend
Members and friends who live across the Bay will
need to do some extra planning when coming to
church. The Eastbound Bay Bridge will be closed
this Labor Day weekend for construction work. Come
to San Francisco via BART or route the drive home by
the Golden Gate Bridge or southern crossings.
The Bejeweled Net
Sunday, September 3 at 11 am in the Sanctuary
service conducted by Laurel Liefert
Process theology is a school of thought influenced
by the metaphysical process philosophy of Alfred
North Whitehead, a British mathematician who
described god as “the poet of the world.”
Former ministerial intern Laurel Liefert will explore
some of the fundamental principles of process
theology and how they relate to the principles of
Unitarian Universalism.
The service will include a medley of readings by
Laurel and Alice Wallace, a longtime member
of the Congregation.
Special music will be provided by flautist Abby
McKee who will play "Aria" by Jacques Ibert,
Achat sha'alti by Paul Schoenfield,
"Madrigal" by Philippe Gaubert, and "Allemande" from
Partita for Flute in A Minor by J. S. Bach.

Good and Welfare
We just learned of long-time member William
Howe's death on August 12th. Our thoughts are
with Bill's family and friends. (Read
the Chronicle obituary online.)
We were saddened to hear that former member Phil
Smith was killed in a collision outside of
Davenport, Washington June 24th while on a
cross-country bicycle ride. Our sympathy and love
are extended to Phil's son Victor, to his entire
family, and to the many other people enriched by
this Renaissance man. (Read
the Chronicle obituary online.)
Michelle Hlubinka's beloved father Ivo Thomas
passed away Tuesday night, August 22nd, after five
months of intense medical treatments in and out of
UCSF. She welcomes your healing thoughts for her
family. Our prayers are with them.
Reverend Mary Harrington Resigns
Reverend Mary Harrington, past Intern
Minister of this Society, has announced her
resignation as
Senior Minister of the Winchester, Massachusetts
Unitarian Society.
In a letter to her congregation, Rev. Harrington
said that she is leaving the pulpit to concentrate
on living with ALS.
"Although I am doing quite well right now, I of
course don’t know what the future holds," Rev.
Harrington wrote. "I do know that I want very much
to spend my time and energy primarily with my family
and friends. Doing what I can to stay as healthy as
possible takes a lot of time. "
Center Closed for Cleaning and Fixes
from Nancy Evans, Interim Executive Director
Donald Johnson reminds us that August 28 thru
September 2 is maintenance week. No meetings are
occurring so that our sextons can work without
interruption. We are getting a lot done!
The week began with a new roof on the Religious
Education wing, garage door repair, and the
installation of two new dishwashers. The Thoreau
room makeover is in process, and the Religious
Education office is being relocated back to the
ministerial suite.
The staff is busy on special projects, and Grace and
Jay and Mike are on vacation. The phones go directly
to voicemail. We will do our best to return urgent
messages, but ask that you hold back on ordinary
questions until after the Labor Day weekend. We hope
you'll be pleased by all that is being accomplished.
Special thanks to the volunteers who cleaned the
outside landscaping and painted the garage walls. A
big thank you to Jim Adams, Ardeth
Fortier, David Foster, Linda
Messner, Lee Most, Raven
Jones-Most, Marc Theobald, Angie and
Bill Wise, and Building and Grounds chair David
Jones. Please contact David Jones at 334-3686 if
you have a skill to share.
Membership Directory Hits the Presses
The good news is that
the new Membership Directory is now available.
Committee chairs and lay leaders can pick up a copy
at the church office on Sundays.
The bad news is that it's already wrong - Acting
Director of Religious Education Natalie Freeburg's
extension will change to 162 next week. Please make
that correction under Center Staff.
