Time Marches On
Sunday, October 15 at 11 am in the Sanctuary
service conducted by Rev. Fred Rabidoux, Pastoral Care Minister

We've all heard a lot about the Baby Boomer generation, what with two US presidents turning 60 this year.

For some, their 60th is a hallmark for celebration; for others it's an unavoidable dread they'd rather have pass silently by. Still other members of our congregation look back on their 60th year as a 10-20-30-year ago memory.

This Sunday Rev. Rabidoux will explore issues around "getting older" and how we are sharing the experience with one another. We can't stop time, but we can appreciate it together as a community that cherishes the values of Elderhood.

Mason Ingram will be the Worship Associate.

Senior Minister Gregory Stewart is participating in the Board Retreat this Sunday. Rev. Stewart's next sermon will be The gods Before God delivered on October 22nd.

Pressures On The Family and What We Can Do
Forum Sunday at 9:30 in the Martin Luther King Room
from Nancy Deutsch

Stressed about schools? Housing? Rising healthcare costs?

Join Eleanor Milroy, Senior Organizer for the Bay Area Organizing Committee (BAOC), as she explores the economic, social, political, cultural, and spiritual pressures on families. Eleanor will help us look at our own lives and stories and the multiple challenges we face.

She believes that by naming these challenges, we are no longer powerless to address them. Eleanor will also examine power — particularly the levels of power that impact our daily lives and what we need to do so that our families are not isolated, disconnected, and overwhelmed.

The Forum is pleased to have Eleanor share a shortened version of this popular workshop she has been presenting to Bay Area schools, churches, and communities. BAOC is made up of congregations -- including ours -- and unions. Eleanor was formerly Assistant Dean at Colorado College. She welcomes families of all ages, shapes, and sizes to attend this presentation.

The program will begin in the Martin Luther King Room at 9:45. Come at 9:30 for conversation, coffee, and (for a slight charge) a light breakfast

Iraq for Sale: The War Profiteers
Sunday in the Chapel at 1:15
from Anna Sylvester

The Forum will sponsor a screening of the Iraq for Sale: The War Profiteers by acclaimed director Robert Greenwald Sunday at 1:15 in the Chapel. The film will take you inside the story of what happens to everyday Americans when corporations go to war.

Curtis P. Fallgren, Editor and Publisher of “Teslacle Times”, a densely-packed newsletter about Ethics in American life, will introduce the film and moderate the discussion.

Of Mice and Men
Friday (October 13) from 7 to 9 pm
from Natalie Freeburg, Acting Director of Religious Education

The Classic Film Lover's Group will have its first screening of this church year Friday (October 13) from 7 to 9 pm. This month's film is Of Mice and Men, produced in 1992, starring John Malkovich and Gary Sinese.

Horton Foote's screen adaptation of John Steinbeck's 1937 novel, explores the friendship between two men who wander the country during the Depression, and explores questions of strength, weakness, usefulness, reality and utopia.

Requested donation for the movie is $5. Future film nights are November 17, December 8, January 12 and February 16.

On the Side of Love
Moderator Linda Enger and The Rev. Gregory L. Stewart reacted to the October 5th state appeals court decision upholding the ban on same-sex marriage by writing a statement citing the Unitarian Universalist history of support for civil-marriage equality for same-sex couples. The San Francisco Chronicle published their letter October 7th.

Great statement of our values!

Another Door, Nicaragua: Spoken Reflections
Next Thursday (October 19th) at 7 pm in the Starr King Room
Rev. Meg Whitaker-Greene talks about her time in Nicaragua next Thursday (October 19). She explored that country with the Interfaith Fact Finding Group in 1985 and with Witness for Peace in 1987 during the Contra attacks. In 2001-2004 she made 3 more trips.

Rev. Whitaker-Greene will give a talk on her journeys and discoveries in connection to the exhibit of her photographs in the Starr King Room. There will be time for others to share insights and experiences.

The program is free and the public is invited.
