Unstupidification
Sunday, August 19 at 11 am in the Church Sanctuary
service conducted by The Reverend Dr. Gordon Gibson

"Unstupidification" may not sound like a very profound topic, or even an appropriate term to use, but this sermon has a Harvard footnote and some insights about why it is good that we gather in religious community.

In the course of the service the Rev. Gibson says that it is likely that we will hear poetry of Gwendolyn Brooks, prose of John Milton, a brief sharing of names of those killed recently in Iraq, some tales about the steep learning curve of a young minister, and wisdom from the Talmud.

A Hospitality Lunch will be offered for $5 after the service. The "chef's choice" will be tasty and a vegetarian entree will be available. Plan to stay and visit with friends and visitors.

Betty Skwarek to Lead Religious Education
Betty Skwarek
from Rev. Gregory Stewart and Executive Director Nancy Evans

We are pleased to announce the appointment of the Society's new Acting Director of Religious Education, Helen Elizabeth "Betty" Skwarek.

Betty is known throughout the Unitarian Universalist Association as a teacher and trainer of religious education professionals. She has also taught in both public and parochial schools.

Betty holds a master's degree in education and has credentials in special education in urban and suburban settings. Her emphasis within Lifespan religious education programs in churches is Unitarian Universalist identity and Unitarian Universalist spiritual formation.

Betty has previously served small, mid-sized, and large Unitarian Universalist churches in California and Austin, Texas.

Betty is a doting grandmother, a vegetarian, an animal lover, and a Divinity student. Please welcome Betty and offer her your assistance in the upcoming Children and Adult Religious Education programs.

Good and Welfare
Laurie Southgate, just a few weeks away from achieving a century birthday, is recovering from a fall and hip accident. She is fortunate to be at home with round-the-clock care. Brief phone calls around meal times and cards from her friends with brief notes written in large print with dark marking pens would be appreciated. Our best wishes to Laurie for a comfortable convalescence.
